here are two very nice tutorials by M7 which they use it to let people to learn and join them

1\ M7 Gray Tutorial - by Lumi (http://aniela.livejournal.com/33383.html) or

GRAY TUTORIAL

Doing the Grays...
...like Mother used to make them.
by Lumi

before download this here are the gray pattern which is used in this guide RS (http://rapidshare.com/files/67702721/gris.pat)

if someone dont know how to put the pattern here where
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS2\Presets\Patterns << in here

This tutorial is based on the assumption that you already know how to level the page and have mastered redoing panel borders, dodging and burning and at least a bit of redrawing, and that you know some basics of making selections and using the pen tool. If you're not familiar with the pen tool, I suggest you look here.

There's no "right way" to do the grays, this is just one of them, and which works best for you depends how well you master the tools needed.

First of all, let's use this panel with Rukia as an example.
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j176/lumivalkea/tutorial/rukia_01.jpg

I have already leveled and precleaned it, and made a clean panel border on a new layer. Now the fun begins. Create a new layer, call it for example "grays". All the work on regraying we're about to do is going to happen on this layer. The tools we're going to need are polygonal lasso and paint bucket. You'll also need a pattern for the gray fill, I use this one.

You can set the paint bucket tool to use this pattern instead of the foreground color, but if you're doing lots of gray areas on the same layer, it might be easier to keep a track of them using white foreground color instead and in the end, finishing the layer with a pattern overlay.

Choose polygonal lasso as the tool.

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j176/lumivalkea/tutorial/polylasso_00.jpg

Set it on "Add to selection", 0px feather. Antialiasing depends on the quality of the raw and the type of the lineart, if you're uncertain, go for antialiased.

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j176/lumivalkea/tutorial/polylasso_01.jpg

Zoom in and follow around the lineart very closely with the lasso. Don't take too much at a time, since the lasso is set on "Add to selection" you can take it all in smaller areas.

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j176/lumivalkea/tutorial/rukia_02.jpg

If you select something that shouldn't be there, just set the lasso on subtract from selection and select the area you don't want to include, then go back to the previous setting and continue making the selections.

Now we have all of the gray areas selected. As you can see, I haven't gone around the shading under her chin or on her cloak collar. This is possible to do but it is faster and the end result is better if you just choose to redraw these bits afterwards.

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j176/lumivalkea/tutorial/rukia_03.jpg

Switch to paint bucket tool.

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j176/lumivalkea/tutorial/paintbucket_01.jpg

And now set it either on foreground or pattern. If you set it on pattern, choose the one linked earlier (you should have installed it right away)! Fill the selection with the pattern using the paint bucket.

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j176/lumivalkea/tutorial/paintbucket_02.jpg

If you used the pattern fill, you can skip this next part. But to do this the harder way around, I'll set mine to foreground, and fill the areas with white. You can now deselect.

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j176/lumivalkea/tutorial/rukia_04.jpg

Now, we add a gray overlay to this layer. In the layer menu, right click on the "grays" layer and choose "Blending Options".

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j176/lumivalkea/tutorial/blending_01.jpg

Now choose Pattern Overlay and select the "gris" pattern, and click OK.

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j176/lumivalkea/tutorial/blending_02.jpg

Now our Rukia looks like this:

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j176/lumivalkea/tutorial/rukia_05.jpg

We're almost there! Now we are going to redraw the shading on Rukia's collar and under her chin!

Lower the opacity of the gray layer so you can see the detail underneath, and create another layer on top of it. We shall name this layer "redraw". For this, we'll need the line tool. Line tool is a part of the pen tool, and pen tool is one you should learn to use because it makes a lot of things a lot easier if you have mastered it.

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j176/lumivalkea/tutorial/linetool_01.jpg

The weight of the line depends solely on how thick the original lines are. We'll use 1px line for this. Set the line tool on paths, and again add to selection.

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j176/lumivalkea/tutorial/linetool_02.jpg

Then redraw the shadings.

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j176/lumivalkea/tutorial/rukia_06.jpg

Once you have all the lines in place, right click and choose "Fill Path", and fill the lines with black.

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j176/lumivalkea/tutorial/linetool_03.jpg

Switch to pen tool, and delete path. Increase the opacity of the grays layer to 100% again, and the result should look like this:

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j176/lumivalkea/tutorial/rukia_07.jpg

We're not quite done yet! As a security measure, if you haven't yet duplicated the background layer, do it now. If you mess up with burning and dodging, you can reverse it by having the original layer unchanged in the bottom. Now, on this layer, burn the blacks and dodge away any dirt that might have been left. This phase will show if you did well with the polygonal lasso. If there's any space between the lineart and the newly done grays, it will show up and the result will look bad.

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j176/lumivalkea/tutorial/rukia_08.jpg

As a finishing touch, we need to add a film grain to the gray layer. If you used the pattern fill from paint bucket, you can skip over the next part.

If you used pattern overlay, you'll need to make a new layer and move it under the layer with the grays.

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j176/lumivalkea/tutorial/filmgrain_01.jpg

Now, choose the gray layer and merge that down. Now you can film grain this layer.

You'll find "Film Grain" under Filters -> Artistic. Again, the settings depend a bit on the size of the page, but for smaller raw scans 2, 0, 0 is a good base setting. For larger scans, try going upto 4, 0, 0. It's worth playing a bit with this setting, see which looks best. Don't use too much grain!

And here's what we end up with!

I am glad you at least beat kenjimaru to this mab :thumbs He also posted a tutorial that deals with doing greys in here (HQ by Shinwei)- which trains with OP pages.
here are two very nice tutorials by M7 which they use it to let people to learn and join them
This is of course for doing good quality releases. It is good tutorial to share. And if you intend to move on to doing one or two greyed pages in a release then it works out. Since it demands time - there is no two ways about it.

this is how i always have done grays ^^ gives you really nice greys, but it takes a long time to do a page... though it is worth it some times ^^

this is the page i have spent most time on of all pages I ever done :P

original bad MQ/LQ ( almost at least :P forgot to put layers in the beginning >< so it's leveled and blackened a little ^^)

the M7 with lasso :) but this takes a serious amount of time so I only do it on HQ scans and the page above was to much details on so it took forever to mark up every singel little thing.. And i actually redrew every singel line inside the gray.. so grays only took half an hour or so, but the redrawing >< I don't want to say the time since it will ony dispiret you :P this way should really just be used on easy pages of one piece... but it can be freely used on manga's like Bleach and Naruto which doesn't hold that amount of detail.

Well....I got an easier way to do the whole HQ-shebang [William Hung XP] But its a part of my lengthy tutorial (akan and other Gorosei should be able to see it and/or check it out if they want) But it partially ruins some lines. Maybe I should edit that tutorial and and put it out public for the heck of it.

OMG !!!! those details on the legendary samurai must be a really hard to draw...damn i feel the pain...going in and stroking every lines and darkening them...

Well it is possible to just gray around the lines so you don't need to redraw them thats how some people gray. It removes the redrawing step and just has a darken-the-lines-if-not-dark-enough yet step.
