The story of a rebel force that defies a Deity has been a topic of great fascination for authors and poets for millennia. There are para-biblical stories about how angels defied God to sleep with mortal women and bear children. John Milton creates a vivid mythos around Satan as a tragic character. Greek poets speak of Prometheus who defied Zeus and was condemned to eternal torment in a similar fashion.

Origin of the Fallen Angels Story

The question most people seem to have is where did the story of the watchers come from? I've mentioned the three passages under the descriptions of Watchers and Lucifer on the demon page, but just to put everything together, I thought I'd put the two stories together. Before doing so, let me briefly say that the question of evil has plagued theologians and philosophers for millennia. In Judeo-Christian thought, the problem was more pronounced - if God is an omnipotent being that is entirely good, how can evil exist? Why would God create a world that was not entirely 'good' in the first place, and even if he did create evil, why would he allow it to continue to exist?

Put another way, why do the righteous suffer while the wicked prosper - issues addressed by Jeremiah and Job. The fallen angels accounts attempt to offer a mythological explanation - part of God's subordinates sinned against him and corrupted humanity in the process.

2 Accounts of the Fall

Generally, there are 2 flavors of the fallen angels myth. The first describes a group of angels who, lead by Azazel, lusted after the women of earth. They defiled themselves by mating with humans and their consorts gave birth to mean-spirited giants. God was not pleased with the rebellion and punished them for their misdeeds, but not before humanity was corrupted in the process. This tale is introduced in Genesis 6:1-4 and elaborated on in the Book of Enoch, part of the Jewish Pseudepigrapha which is a collection of works not found in the bible.

The other story involves the mightiest angel who, out of pride, rebelled against God during the time of Creation. This mighty angel (Lucifer) sought to overthrow God, but he failed and was cast out of heaven to become Satan, the adversary. Then, out of contempt for mankind, he lead Adam and Eve to sin.

In addition to these accounts, there is another account of the Satan who directly opposed God, but was never fully explained.

As mentioned in the Watchers description, there are two potential biblical passages that refer to the first account of the fallen angel myth - Genesis 6:1-4 and Psalm 82:1, 5-7. To summarize, Gen 6 explains that the angels married women, but does not explicitly condemn this while Psalm 82 mentions that the angels sinned, but does not mention that the cause of their sin was that they married mortal women. There is no biblical evidence to support any connection between the two passages. There is only one potential passage referring to the second myth - Isaiah 14:12-15. Most scholars conjecture that this myth was derived from a lost Canaanite myth about a rebellion to overthrow El and Elyon.

How about we all describe what our own angels would be like?

Mine would be rather short for an angel, perhaps around 5 feet 5 inches or so. She would have beautiful raven black hair as well as black wings. I know that isn't typical for angels (lets say its rather rare) but she came into the world that way and it shapes who she is. Because she has black wings if she is seen she is sometimes mistaken for an angel of death, which is incorrect since she is my guardian angel. Because she has always looked different she has her own sense of style and doesn't feel the need to dress in "traditional" angel attire. She is willing to play with colors and likes to wear chokers (hey I think chokers are cute, and I am not talking about the ones with spikes but the simple cloth ones with perhaps a little lace on them). She is highly intelligent, excessively loving, and very loyal. She sometimes can be over protective and tries to influence me away from things she thinks might be too dangerous or risky. Of course I am stubborn so it doesn't always work. :p

I am still trying to decide on a name but it's hard so if you have suggestions let me know. I want something that sounds good and has an appropriate meaning.

So come on guys make her some friends. ^_^

It's quite easy, if you have a phone with a web browser you just enter in the forum address and you will get the mobile view of the forum. Empire Inc was kind enough to activate the mobile skin after I asked. You will only be able to view text and I would suggest you avoid any posts that might have spoilers since you will see what the spoilers are (it doesn't hide them and you will see them in all their glory).

I have a Blackberry Pearl which has a decent browser (I suggest if you have a blackberry to install mobile opera as well) but the mobile view of the forum is very basic so it will work on virtually any phone that has a browser. Just make sure you have a data plan since you don't need unexpected charges.

I think you have to do 10 different people before it will let you rep the same person again and if you rep too much in a 24 hour period it will prevent you from repping for half a day or a day (not exactly sure how long)

It's your reputation. Below those dots under there is a scale. You click on that and you can give someone reputation. The exclamation mark has the opposite affect. So if you like someone or their posts click on the scale.

You can then type a comment and most people put their user name as well.

Haha, we are in the same boat apparently. I have eggs and some cheese and that's about it. I have meat in the freezer but they all require a lot of preparation so its not something I will do during the work week. I only have 3 teabags left too, though I get 2 uses out of those.
