So, here's the question.

Do you want FH to scanlate Light Novels?
If so, which series?

Please yes or no, and as many series as you want scanlated. This is a project still in planning, and has not even been approved by the administrators yet. However, for this project to become a reality, your support is essential. If we do not get enough support, this project will be scrapped.

As most of you probably know, there are practically no scanlations available when it comes to light novels. This is why we need your support, as this project is one that is very much unseen and unexplored. So we need to know is it worth it? Do the fans want it?

. . . I've wondering, but why people don't vote for "The Twelve Kingdoms" ? Is it possible that they didn't even see the anime?! The Twelve Kingdoms has one of the most interesting stories I have ever seen . . . I think you should try looking up for some info on every name you don't know, so that good material won’t be left out.

I'd be interested in reading the 12Kingdoms or Trinity Blood novels, actually. I'd heard the Trinity Blood ones were much better than the anime (ZOMG! What a letdown -that- was) so I'd definitely read those.

Did you guys like totally not know about BAKA-TSUKI??? They're translating ALOT of light novels. And did you not know that alot of the novels you listed are taken by them already and some are already OFFICIALLY translated and at your local bookstores.

The following light novels are officially released and at your bookstores and if you translate them, your making more work on yourself and your also liable to be sued. :)

Shakugan no Shana, Ballad of a Shinigami, Trinity Blood, Slayers, Welcome To the NHK, The Twelve Kingdoms, .hack series, Kyou Kara Maou, Strawberry Panic, Full Metal Panic!, and Onegai Sensei


The following series are already being fan translated:

Suzumiya Haruhi (all 9 books translated), Zero no Tsukaima, Spice and Wolf, Baccano!, and a bunch of others non listed.


The only series above that are not taken officially or fan translated are:

Inukami, Brave Story, Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora, Kure-nai, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni


Also, I'd suggest hosting your project translations at Baka-Tsuki, since they are the most well known and only english light novel fan translation group on the internet.

Right... you're saying what we're doing is illegal and should be stopped, yet you recommend us to go host a project elsewhere? I'm just confused as to how that is supposed to help make matters less illegal... or did I miss the point? And before you point it out, translating/scanlating, or fan-subbing non-licensed material is still illegal due to the fact that the original creators (in Japan) still hold the copyright to the original works.

Mate, do your research before you start citing copyright laws. :)

Ok, your new to the light novel fan translating industry, and obviously you didn't understand my post.

Light novel fan translating is here for really only one purpose.... to interest OFFICIAL publishers in publishing the official translations and to let us be able to read the novels till they are officially translated.

I was telling you not to translate SHANA or any of the other OFFICIALLY translated series. And I was saying not to translate the already in process fan translations.

Then I showed you which projects you had listed that HAVE NOT been translated by fans or officially. Those are the projects fans would like to see.

I said to host them on Baka-Tsuki, since they are the most widely known and only fan translation group for novels.


Back to the whole copyright thing, what we do as novel translators, is take down the translations once they are liscensed and we DO NOT translate light novels already translated.

By you translating Shakugan no Shana, you are telling Viz that they shouldn't even try to continue to translate. Novel translating cost alot of money, we do NOT want to crush a brand new industry.

So please help gather more support for the industry by translating novels that have yet to be fan translated or officially translated.

I'd personally enjoy read the Inukami! light novels. :)

To say it more cruelly, i think the license from Viz doesn't really matter to me because i'm not from " North America, Europe, South America" so unless my country license the project then Viz license it or not doesn't really concern me much. So yah, stop the license issue here. (i'm just giving an example, so don't even try to start another argument due to my comments).

Another thing, the light novels translating is involving around translators so as long as you want to do them, go ahead.

Well Matt you are half right Vol: 3 of the Manga is due out in June, the third light novel which has before this been released alongside the manga volumes has no release date announced.

If anything it looks like Viz has already given up on the novels in favor of the manga.

Hi guys

I would like to admit, that I wish to buy Shakugan no Shana translation in English, but atm there is no solid work done. Viz is taking some time to translate them and buying them is a royal pain in the ass. Ordered 2 of the books translated in English and now waiting 3 weeks for them to arrive.

I would definitive like it if some one did a fan translation of Shakugan no Shana novels.

In fact, starting a online reading shop is possible? If you take a small fee for people to read and pay off to the ones that own rights to it, every one earns on it.
Instead of using money, you use points or credits that you buy for money, so to read something costs X amount of points, so people wont need to pay each and every time they wish to read something or so. Just an idea.

Besides, I am quite desperate for the Shakugan no Shana novels to pay the full book price or more.

Light Novel:

A light novel (ライトノベル raito noberu?) is a novel with anime or manga style illustrations, primarily targeting teens and young adults. The term "light novel" is a wasei-eigo, or a Japanese term formed from words in the English language. Light novels are often called ranobe (ラノベ ranobe?) or rainobe (ライノベ rainobe?) for short.

Despite their association with anime or manga, light novels are prose, the equivalent of a young adult novel. In recent years, light novel stories have been popular choices for adaptation into a manga or a TV anime series. Light novels are often serialized in literary magazines like Gekkan Dragon Magazine and The Sneaker, Dengeki hp, or media franchise magazines like Comptiq and Dengeki G's Magazine. An example of the light novel would be the Slayers novels written by Hajime Kanzaka. Slayers was made into a manga series as well as a very popular anime of the same name.

Light novels have become very popular in Japan, and the publishing companies are constantly searching for new talent with annual contests, each of which earns the winners a cash prize and publication of their novel. The Dengeki Novel Prize is the largest, with over 2000 submissions annually.

Licensed English translations of Japanese light novels are few, due to low demand and the amount of translation needed being far higher than for manga. The few light novels that have had English translations are reformatted into standard mass market paperbacks or similar to manga tankōbon, but starting in April 2007, Seven Seas Entertainment will be the first English publisher to print light novels in their original, Japanese format of 10.5cm x 15cm.[1] Other English-language publishers that produce light novels are Tokyopop, Viz, DMP, Dark Horse, and CMX.


Writing Style

The writing style for light novels is often very different from novels aimed at adults. Some of this style may be lost in the process of translation.

In the original Japanese light novels, furigana are used occasionally for two main reasons. First, they are intended for young adults who don't have a strong command of kanji. Second, many light-novel writers prefer to invent new application of furigana to their own liking, which are not seen in common usage of Japanese.

Light novels also frequently have very short paragraphs, often only one or two sentences in length, and are usually driven by dialogue. The overall effect is for a very fast read.

though i've been wondering whether i should join FH, once i saw this thread i couldn't help it. if it wouldn't bother you guys too much, it'd be great if you could translate slayers XD. but wouldn't it be difficult to translate novels like these? or would it be easier without the cleaning and scanning? i don't know. i've never read a light novel before but this sounds like a great plan and a promising way to pass through the rest of senior year for me. :]

I would love to see someone actively working on Saiunkoku Monogatari. Progress on getting new chapters out is painfully slow...perhaps one per three or four months. -_- I think it's because no one has taken it on as a firm project, and the manga is even more beautiful than the anime, so...

Other than that, do these light novels have "furigana" like mangas or are they written in kanji only?
