View Full Version : Moka and Tsukune - Then and Now

This is something I think would make for a good discussion (argument, fist-fight, total carnage, whatever):

Look at these:

Then:

And Now:
http://www.franky-house.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=450&stc=1&d=1256699846

Then:
http://www.franky-house.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=451&stc=1&d=1256699846

And Now:
http://www.franky-house.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=452&stc=1&d=1256699846

Pardon my awful example pictures for "Now". Anyway, I know I'm not the only one to notice the change, and I know teenagers age, but this is only over about a year and a half...

So...thoughts? Preferences? Criticisms? Sex jokes?

I'll start off by saying that, while it's obviously symbolic of them aging and maturing, I still don't really like it. Moka looks fine either way, but she was waaay cuter back then. And, if anything, Tsukune's gotten uglier...not by much, but still... I just think the Mangaka could have symbolized their maturing a bit more gracefully...

their just pumping up the fanservice which in my opinion will be the death of this show :(
If i wanted to watch/read something with fan service id watch Kanokon instead

I really loved the simpler Then drawings for all the characters. They look less cartoony now which I think added Kawaii. Also I find their emotions harder to read if they always have shading. Are they blushing all the time now? Tsukune's certainly buffed up a bit

Actually for Tsukune, I liked it right in the middle. His face hadn't changed that much, but he was still noticeably more mature than at the manga's start. I think this is an example of a manga's art style changing in a good way. But now he is almost unrecognizable by comparison...

I think I'm in the minority here, but I actually like the new art style. Tsukune and the Monster Girls look more lifelike. The older art style was far too cartoonish for my taste.

I am with you on this one.

I prefer the newer drawn versions of the Rosario + Vampire characters versus the beginning versions of the characters. The newer drawings of the characters seem more lifelike in my opinion.

Also, reading the newer characters emotions isn't as hard for me, when compared to some other people.

But as, Tycho, stated in his post, the art style of the mangaka has evolved in a very good way over the time span of this series.

I don't really like the realistic aspect. Its just the plotline (one guy, cute girls, high school harem) seems to match a cartoony style. I probably like it because I preferred the first arc to the current one, where alot more of the focus was on the romance. Halfway through was a good stage as the characters were more defined but weren't what I consider 'over the line' in development of artwork.

I understand people liking realism, but I actually don't see the new art style as any more realistic as the old one, just less toony. In that sense, I prefer the older one simply because, like I said, the old one was the original, and changing as much as it did is not something a manga should do.

Also, the older one is more pleasing to my eye, though this is a matter of taste.

I agree although one way of looking at it is that the character's have grown up and because they are more mature, one way for us to really connect with this idea is through detailed and defined artwork.

I really really like the newer style. the old one was way toonish, though not to the point of being unpleasent. I still prefer the new style.

I LOVE HALLOWEEN!!!

I'd like to see some more toony stuff but what can you do. The newer style certainly suits the second arc

The toony style made all the characters look cute including Tsukune.
{Note that I am a girl}
But the new style I think suits the characters now that they have matured.

agreed love the new style about time the author made the characters mature more...well at least tsukune and out/inner moka the other girls haven't really changed in my opinion.

You're right, if the others had changed a huge amount I probably would have include B/A pics of them as well. In any case, I suppose I have to agree that the newer style fits the newer plot, but I still wouldn't mind if the older style was still in use. Because I still like that one better :D

I don't understand the question...

Double post, go me!

By the way, I love how the general tone of this thread has completely morphed from "F*ck the new style, I love the old one" to "F*ck the old style, I love the new one"

I think most of the change was during the first chapters and mostly related to the mangaka being new and getting better at drawing. If you check out the alternate version in the art book so is that even more obvious. I think thats why the rest of the cast is less changed as they showed up later. I like the current art and I think Moka is cute enuff :)

completely agree with ya, but I still just recently noticed the changed in art design when the others said something about it and the newest 2 chapters were in better quality.

Kurumu showed up in chapter 2 or 3, didn't she?

*note-just now checks out Kurumu is Ch2*

Wow, as a matter of fact Kurumu did change a lot...don't see how I didn't notice that, but it seems no-one else did either. :D And Yukari, who appears in Ch5 changes a little bit over the course of time as well. And around the time they met Mizore, midway through season ichi (damn right I know Japanese numbers! ...not much else though... :D), Kurumu and Yukari were pretty anchored, but Tsukune and Moka were still morphing...Mizore hasn't really changed that much, save cutting her hair like two chapters after they meet her...

I first noticed the major change in Tsukune and Moka right around the start of the second season (that's season ni! gotta practice! :D).

LOL I never even noticed that, I think I'll go back to the start of this season and see if anything else has changed! I wonder if gin and that karate guy changed at all.

I'm pretty sure that Gin has changed over time. He gives off a slightly more adult presence, apart from when he starts arguing about perverted stuff

Not only that we actually seen gin interested in one girl for once and that was Sun-senpai!

HOLY OREGON, IT'S THE MINOTAUR!!! ESCAPE FROM THE PRISON PLANET!!! IT'S THE KING OF ARIZONA!!!

Anyway, in terms of aesthetics, I liked the older style better; in terms of reflecting the series' general tone, I think the newer fits better. All that said, I like the middle style best.

That would be this:

Tsukune's manned up a little without having his face morphed so much. Moka is older looking, but still hotter than her more current iteration. In that regard, I like this look best.

I like the new more mature style of the artwork, but I find the author focusses too much on some details, and not enough on others which leaves us with an unbalanced assortment of really beautiful panels next to crappy, repetitive, and badly detailed ones.

I agree with Tycho and that picture is a good example :)

I'm more a fan of the artwork from the later chapters of the first "season" and the early second "season".

But I really don't dislike the latest style or early style. Even if the early stuff was cartoon-y, and the latest makes Kurumu and Moka look like they did some major dieting. And I kinda look at the maturing of the art as symbolic of the maturing of the characters.

to be honest I've found the artwork to be fitting the whole way through, as a reader it implies development of the characters, but if I look at it from Tsukune's point of view the cartoony style represents not believing whats happening, and then the more he gets used to it, the more 'realistic' it looks.

but thats just my 2 cents

I definitely agree with you shadowsoffate, to me it's quite refreshing to see a manga where you could actually see the character's growth, so I don't mind the art at all, it fits with the story :)

That is totally true, but I sort of wish they wouldn't change the characters' actual appearance, you know? That's why, as I said, I like the end of the first season best, in terms of character style.

true, that is also the time I fidn the best, but I find that I am looking forward to seeing what the art will look look like in each chapter, because I look forward to seeing how the character's will 'age' so too speak

I agree that the change may be a little exxagerated, (okay, ALOT!) but I think as long as they have the characters keep their same atitudes, the change shouldn't bother people too much. (Though I wish they would go back to the old designs or at least make it a little more like it was before!)

Look, I understand your feelings on the subject, but this thread is more about people venting how they feel than actually wanting/being able to change things. So that last comment you made really was unessesary/uncalled for. (sorry about the spelling)
